Knowledge management: Facilitating Knowledge processes

Facilitating business processes through knowledge management
In the last three years, BioPAD has made significant progress in terms of establishing a solid foundation for Knowledge Management within the BICs. However, existing initiatives focussed to a large extent on Information management or managing explicit knowledge as opposed to managing both explicit and tacit knowledge. In addition to this, a need existed for a BRIC integrated Knowledge management strategy which guides and aligns Knowledge management initiatives across the BICs. BioPAD will take the responsibility for the implementation of the KM strategy with inputs from the other BICs
The Knowledge Management strategy will make provision for two phases: we have initiated the first phase where a baseline of information and knowledge management initiatives has been embarked upon. These initiatives need to be maintained and streamlined as BICs become more efficient and effective as regards Knowledge Management. During the second phase, the focus will be on establishing a world-class Knowledge Management capability within BICs. In such a capability the BICs would recognise and use their internal and external biotechnology knowledge resources to make sound investment decisions and to support stakeholders by being a biotechnology knowledge hub.
In the 2009/2010 financial year BioPAD will move to the next level of intensity with an increased focus on Knowledge management as opposed to Information management.  The knowledge sharing objective will be supported by the following activities:

  • Develop a governance model and related infrastructure for Knowledge Management.
  • Deploy the Alfresco content management system implemented in all the BICs.
  • Deploy the Pentaho Project/ Business Intelligence System
  • Conduct a preliminary study on the needs and requirements of a biotechnology portal.
  • Coordinate and present Knowledge Management workshops.
  • Consolidate databases within the BRICs, update  and provide access to stakeholders
  • Develop a quality control system for the effectiveness and efficiency within the Knowledge Management Department at BioPAD.
